Changing your motor oil is one of the best ways to improve engine performance, and extend engine life. When you change your car’s oil according to the manufacturer, you protect your car’s fuel efficiency, remove harmful contaminants, and ensure that your Dodge or RAM is running smoothly. Premier Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Buena Park’s exceptional service department is here to help you will all your oil changes and annual maintenance.
Over time motor oil breaks down, when that happens it loses its effectiveness and cannot protect your engine properly. The oil is designed to deal with dirt, dust, and small amounts of water from the engine heating and cooling. The more a car is driven, the more the level of contaminants increases. An oil filter removes these particles as the oil passes through, but an oil’s additives are used up over time, and the oil starts to degrade. After the oil becomes over-run with contaminants and starts to break down, it can no longer do its job and has to be changed.
Your oil should be changed as often as suggested by the manufacturer of your car; this can typically be found in your car’s owner manual. Newer vehicles have sensors that keep track of driving hours and drive temperatures to calculate the oil’s condition to then display service alerts. Before improvements to fuel-delivery systems, oil changes needed to be done in about 3,000 miles. Today, those intervals can stretch from 5,000 to 10,000 miles. Service technicians can also inform you of how long your current oil change will last, and when the next one should be.
Some service technicians recommend checking oil levels using the dipstick at least once a month. When checking the oil levels be sure your car is parked on even ground. If the engine was running, beware of hot spots under the hood. Something else to pay attention to when using the dipstick is the color of the oil. If the oil appears to be light or milky, or like it may have metal particles in it, then take your vehicle to a service technician right away.
Your vehicle’s owner’s manual should also tell you what kind of oil your car needs. Cars or trucks that have more than 75,000 miles would be better off using high mileage oil. Climate and your driving style can also have a part to play in the type of oil that should be used. City driving is tough on an engine, so you’ll want a high-performance oil, but if you live in a colder climate, synthetic is best. Synthetic oil can improve the durability and performance of your vehicle while working better in high or low-temperature extremes.
